How to ace your media interview

media interview

A media interview can go by in a blink and leave you with the feeling that you could have said some things different. Achieve interview success by being prepared, taking your time and following up with your interviewer.

Ask the reporter to send some questions ahead of time. If the reporter does not want to comply, ask for an overview of the information the reporter is seeking.

Speak slowly and clearly throughout the interview. Take a second to think about the question before answering. Pausing will let you construct a better response and it will allow the reporter to catch up on their notes. However, be sure not fill your pauses with verbal fillers such as “um,” “like,” and “you know.” Also, if you don’t know the answer to a question, “I don’t know,” is a perfectly¬†acceptable¬†response.¬†

If there is a point that you forgot to make during the interview, follow up a day or two after. A media relations specialist can also coach you, facilitate the interview process or provide the media with background information on the company.
